KOCHI: Quite familiar as he is with the ways of the police, it was one trick Biti Mohanty failed to see through. During his interrogation by Kerala police on Friday night the cops, taking care to make it look accidental, left Biti alone in a room that had a phone. As the cops expected he immediately dialed a lifeline. Top police sources told TOI that Biti sought legal advice from a close relative of his father — “someone whom we are sure is one of his uncles” — to know what he should do next.
It was a few hours into the questioning, after Biti had accepted that he was not Raghav Rajan. “Police have caught up with me. They know who I am,” he is learnt to have told the person at the other end. And the advice he got was not to relent. “Stick to it. You are Raghav, not Biti. You have enough proof to support this,” his relative said.
Immediately after this call, the cops confronted Biti with the evidence and he had no option but accept the reality. But Biti, sources said, went back to his ‘Raghav’ mask on Sunday. He has stopped co-operating. “We have his laptop and other gadgets. But he is not parting with passwords. We will hand them over to Rajasthan police,” sources said.
